Discover the Benefits of Studying in Canada: Insights from Ariana Markle
Studying abroad comes with all kinds of challenges—some related to academia, others to how one fits in culturally. At Atontope, we often invite international students to share aspects of their lives with us because the insights they offer are invaluable for others pursuing academic or career goals in Canada.
We explore why international students continue to choose Canada, how they prepare for life in another country, what they learn during their early days on campus, and what advice they have for others considering similar journeys.
Our guest this time is Ariana Markle, currently in her fourth year at Toronto Metropolitan University. Born and raised in Barbados, Ariana came to Canada to pursue her dreams of studying and living here. When she isn’t meeting class deadlines, she enjoys reading, traveling, hanging out with friends, and discovering new spots around Toronto.
Why did you choose to study in Canada, and what are you studying?
Growing up in a small country, I dreamed of studying in a larger, more dynamic place. Canada, particularly Toronto, was my top choice, as I always wanted to experience city life. That’s why I chose to study in the heart of the city. I am currently majoring in marketing and minoring in sociology. Coming from a country without skyscrapers, trains, or scenic lakes, I wanted to make a home in Canada—and I believe I made the right choice.
What were your early impressions of Canada as a student?
It was so big and fast-paced! Living in a city where everyone is walking or taking public transport can be a little overwhelming at first. Surprisingly, I liked the snow and cold—though not when it gets too harsh. My best impressions came from the food scene. Canada is rich in diverse cultures, and there are many incredible food spots to explore.

What advice would you give international students coming to Canada? What do you wish you knew before you began studying here?
I suggest students put themselves out there and, if possible, live on or near campus, especially in the first year. That’s one of the best ways to make new friends. Don’t be shy about talking to classmates or making plans with them outside of class. I’d also recommend joining student groups to connect with like-minded people.
What sort of work did you find as a student?
I joined a student group at the university and worked as an international and exchange student mentor. I helped new students integrate into Canada by discussing campus life, classes, things to do in the city, and tips for making friends. I was a companion for those who needed advice.
I also secured a marketing internship at Atontope. It’s amazing to work with a team that cares about international students while applying the skills I’ve learned in my degree. Working in marketing has been both a rewarding and fun experience.
What is the nicest thing about studying in Canada, and the hardest thing?
My independence is both the nicest and hardest aspect of studying in Canada. I had the incredible opportunity to study in the country of my dreams, and coming here alone has taught me the value of independence. Having the freedom to do what I want has been empowering, but leaving my family behind has been tough. I miss them all the time. Independence is wonderful, but it can be challenging when you can’t rely on your family for support.

What do you intend to do with your degree?
I aim to build a career in marketing. My minor in sociology helps me better understand people and cultures, which is essential for marketing effectively. I’m particularly interested in market research, consumer behavior, and social media.
